Byron,
I believe you have a Smerinthus ocellatus ocellatus which usually feeds on
willows, poplars, apples and frequently wanders some distance before
pupation. Garden soil would be nice. The larva is usually green but takes
on the brownish tint just prior to pupation in a subterranean chamber.
