Funny you should mention that:

I have had this in some of my Chiles at home and have wondered about it
myself..

The stems lose leaves and get a dark rotten withered look to them
eventually dieing..

I tried cutting off the affected sections and was unsuccesful in saving
the plants..

Varieties I have had exibit this problem were Chinese, Bactum and to a
lesser extent Pubescens..

I have my own thoughts about this as most of the Chiles affected were in
a small shade house on the Eastern wall of my house..

I think the problem is probably fungal, our winter up here was pretty
dry, so that probably blows my theory out of the water..

I have some plants that are showing signs of this problem and am
experimenting with a Bourdeaux/mild bleach spray..

If I have Dieback on other Chiles (Annums mainly)the stems stay woody
and relatively dry and when pruned seem to survive (they look terrible
but they do survive)..

I think that overwatering probably contributes to the problem, as I
wrote earlier we did have a dry winter and I did keep the water up to
the Chiles..

Chiles in the ground do not seem to be affected as yet..
