I'm ex-Chicago area chilehead, so I can only be of small help. From my
experience of Chicago giardinara, all varieties are hot -- at least all the
one's I bought. When in doubt have your friend look to see if any are
labelled hot or not. I can't remember any particular brands.

They were always available at the supermarket because it's real popular with
hot dogs and Italian beef.

The a good test of any place that claims to be an "authentic" Chicago-style
hot dog place (outside of Chicago), is to ask them if they've got any
giadinara for your dog. If you get a blank stare, the owner ain't from
Chicago.
