To me there is a big difference between tossed "greens" salad and other
types. I do tend to eat a tossed salad before the entree, but I would never
consider eating a Cole slaw or potato, macaroni salad except with the meal.
Somehow I think of the former as a preliminary dish and the latter as a
"part of" the main meal the same as I would a vegatable or potato. Now fruit
salad, I'm not sure where that fits!.
