BERLIN (Reuters)

A German gardener has invented a plant that stinks so much it
discourages cats and dogs from leaving unwanted "gifts" on lawns.

The horrible-smelling hybrid, dubbed the "get lost plant" in the Swabian town of
Essingen where it was developed, has become popular among people keen to keep
feline and canine visitors out of their gardens, Die Welt daily reported on
Friday.

Dieter Stegmaier invented the smelly plant by crossing a wild Australian plant
and a
South American coleus and will present the city of Stuttgart with 1,000 of the
plants in
November.

Die Welt said several million cuttings from the pungent plants have already been
Oordered and are due for delivery in April 2001.
