He was a bit dumb to call the pepper C. chinense but I think I know 
why. Back then they had no idea that all peppers originated from a 
relatively small area in central Bolivia/Peru. He saw a scotch bonnet 
shaped pod and decided it looked like a Chinese lantern - voila - 
Capsicum chinense! Too bad the name stuck.

(Or should that be viola - my brian hurts.)
