I have one of the round charcoal ones, and must say that if I were buying a
new one, I would go with electric. It's very challenging/annoying to smoke
any large item, as keeping the charcoal burning hot enough to maintain the
correct temperature yet keeping the smoke in is very difficult.

I helped a friend automate a homebrewed smoker made out of an old
refrigerator and some old stove parts. If I were to do a new smoker, I
would probably build one simmilar to his - it's not pretty, but produces
great results inexpensively and it's very easy to get predictable,
controllable results. Also, you can choose whether you want to hot-smoke
or cold-smoke with no modifications to the smoker.
