[CH] Aphids -- How do I get rid of them?

First let me say this is my first post to the list. I have been reading the
digest version for a few weeks now and love it.
I brought my potted peppers in for the winter and noticed aphids came in
with the peppers. I had to move near the end of summer so I lost all my 'in
ground peppers'. I really don't want to loose my potted peppers.
I tried spaying my largest plant with a water / dish soap mixture (grandma's
recommendation) I'm not sure it did anything. I've been sitting down with
my Hab plant at night when I watch TV and squashing the aphids but it is a
loosing battle.
Is there anything I can do to eliminate the aphids? Should I be concerned
that I have aphids living in my kitchen? Will they spread to the house
plants? I was hoping to stay away from pesticides but I'm willing to go
that way if someone has a good recommendation.
