Hey Carol,
I got a twist on your seedling starting problem. I accomplish your task by
using my easy to use automated hydroponic system. A NFT hydroponic system to
be exact. NFT stands for nutrient film technique. It works by having a cup
of perlite rested in a flat bottomed 70 foot(or shorter)channel. A seed is
placed at the top of each cup and then covered again with a thin film of
perlite. A nutrient filled film of water is sent down each channel and
tickles the base of each 2 inch by 2 inch by 2 inch cup of perlite. The
moisture makes it's way up the base of the cup to the seed and gives it just
enough nutrition. The plants are fed three times a day with 1/2 hour cycles.
This method is sure fire. I would be glad to give some friendly advice for
someone who would like to try on their own.
	Good luck
