[CH] Optimal Planting distance?

I've got a question for you all.  Let's see what everone says.

I've planted chile plants as little as one foot from each other and as
far away as 2 feet away from each other.  I don't know that I can I
paid attention or noticed any difference in production.  I did notice
that the plants closer together grew taller, those farther apart, grew
fuller.

Is there an "optimal" distance when planting small chile plants?  I'm
assuming distance isn't too critical for the production of chiles,
however too close and you choke off light to the plants.
