used to have a fence when we gardened much more intensively but had gotten away from veggies towards flowers and had lost the fence in the process.  Started last year with just a dozen or so Habs and some tomatas with no probs.  This year the varmits returned and now I will have to rethink my fence decision.  The fence really doesn't have to deer proof, just about 3-4 ft will make them change there paths and eat the neighbors offering instead
