I have never had this pleasure of life.  Although, with an ethnic
background of Polish and German, this reminds me of stories from my
GGrandmother who talked about butchers who used to sell blood in
Detroit and Chicago back in the 1920's and 1930's.  The soup is called
czarnina (pronounced chair-NEE-nah).  For the education of the CH
audientce, czarnina is duck blood soup.   For many I'm sure, this may
sound quite UNappetizing.  However, I assure you it's a wonderful soup
INMHO.

Anyway, my grandmother said (as you might well imagine) that ducks were
hard to come by in Detroit and Chicago.  And, as they are now, are a
bit more pricey than a chicken or other fowl.  So, they would
substitute whatever the butcher had for sale...
