More than likely, the "spice" (or, at least, part of it) is dill.  Dill 
pickles aren't supposed to taste like a dill patch (if they do, there's way 
to much dill in the recipe).

Dropping chiles into store-bought pickles is a good short-cut, but if 
you're gonna do that, you may consider splitting the chiles open before you 
do (since the chile doesn't get "cooked" with the brine, getting heat 
through the skin may be a bit tougher ... opening 'em up guarantees that 
the brine can get to work spreading the wonderful heat throughout).
