Saturday, October 9th Russ has had a quiet several days. He is warm and affectionate when we visit. He gives a great hug and kiss. He is not combative nor agitated, but he is restless. He asked to go for a walk tonight and his father and the attendant took him around the unit twice. He walks tall and with spirit. He tires easily and dozes frequently. Some of this is due to the sedation -- they still want to keep him from getting out of bed and hurting his head. Russ responds appropriately to questions and commands most of the time. At other times he seems confused. We brought in a piece of Play Doh and asked him what it was, he said, "That's Aubree's cookie " and proceeded to show and tell the attendant how she makes them. He has an attendant 24/7 ! He is doing well with the psychoneurologist evaluation and memory testing. We are expecting that a therapy routine will be established this coming week. We do see some reduction in the head and eye swelling. Russ is very aware that something is not right with his left eye (he tells us that "it's not working"). The doctors are concerned that he may have impaired vision in his left eye, but we are awaiting further tests when the swelling subsides. Overall, we are quite pleased with the care and his progress to date. We need to constantly remind ourselves that head and brain injuries take time to heal. Thank all of you for your emails, cards and prayers !!! You are wonderful!!! We can't thank you enough for your support. Audrey and Russ Spanard
