I've never seen a chile called "pepita". But, I am not familiar with
all regional names. While doing research for a similar question
involving pepitas (as used in a recipe) I found a very interesting
page with a bunch of recipes and containing this quote "We even found
a series of four mature chile plants with stem diameters over 5
centimeters (2 inches)," wrote Dr. Sheets.

The page(s) may be seen - with pictures and a nice dissertation on the
chile culture at www.fiery-foods.com/dave/ceren.asp
