Here's a paragraph from "Peppers of the World, an Identification
Guide" by Dave DeWitt and Paul Bosland:

"Rocotos and Canarios, Capsicum Pubescens":

"It is grown today in the Andes from Chile to Columbia, mostly in
small family plots. It is also cultivated in highland areas of
Central America and Mexico. The common name for this species in South
America is Rocoto or Locoto. In Mexico it is also called Chile
Manzano (apple pepper), and Chile Peron (pear pepper), allusions to
it's fruit ike shapes. In some parts of Mexico and Guatemala,
Pubescens is called Chile Caballo (horse pepper). Yellow C. Pubescens
is called Canarios or canaries, in parts of Mexico, particularly
Oxaca, and some parts of Central America."

It's an excellent book and it's available from Amazon.com. If you
order it from Amazon.com through my bookstore, I will receive a
pittance:-)
