Capsaicin is *very* easily volitalized.  It has a tenuous hold on the chile, 
at best, and it doesn't take much to make it let go.  You made a version 
of poor man's pepper spray that dates back thousands of years to a 
time when the ancients were said to burn piles of dried chiles as a form 
of gas attack/defense.

What I found to be very cheap and mostly effective was a simple as 
pulling my T-shirt up over my nose.  You can also find the "half face 
resiprators" at most good paint supply stores or on line from a number 
of safety supply places.  Most any cheap (particulate) filter will do- it 
doesn't seem to take much to block out the cap.
