My turn, then back to lurking..

After listening to the pro's and con's I find that the list works well. I don't want advertising, or the hassle of logging in etc. Other than the subscribe un-subscribe instructions being incorrect to validate the request I find no fault with how the system works. It's probably due to my age (not as old as some) but if it isn't broken don't fix it.... (is there an echo in here?) If the list were to go to a different format I would most likely not follow. I archive the conversations and recipes so I would have to be content with reruns. Even with the ups and downs of the list, it's still and invaluable resource.

Back to the shadows!

You have to remember that the list predates the WWW and Web pages. It's a relic from the days before graphical user interfaces, when everything was character-based. That still works but the world has changed around it; for example I have to set each message as plain text in this Hotmail or it won't go through.

There are other forums for discussing peppers; many people here are also on the MSN group, but that has its own technical problems and quirks. There are bulletin boards and Yahoo groups as well, but with all graphical interfaces comes ADVERTISING.

You have to stop and think about it, this list is not run as a for-profit venture, and it's not trying to sell anything. People use it to promote their own sales once in a while, but that never goes far before the rotten vegetables start flying. We are essentially self-policing and for the most part well-behaved, which is rare in unmoderated online discussion.

What does the future hold for the list? More of the same, I would guess, unless someone at globalgarden pulls the plug, or they're bought by someone who then pulls the plug. We will share notes and participate in the occasional dust-up (Tuna: The New Jicama-Vidalia) as long as there are interested people with experiences to share.
