Re: Something that I don't understand... is it simply because people aren't washing them before they eat them? Washing any and ALL fresh produce goes a long way to reducing your risks. Even the stuff that comes in the bags and is 'thoroughly washed' gets a quick rinse from me, which takes the chances down to near zero. Re: How does the border patrol know which to let enter and which ones not? A lot of it is visual... and previous experiences. If you have a particular supplier that consistently ships you fruit that is contaminated with mud & crop debris, then you know to pay a bit more attention to them. If one consistently ships you product that is in outstanding condition, with a minimum of grade outs (rejects) then they receive less attention. Folks that have policies and practices in place (HACCP) aren't likely to be causing you the trouble. Re: salad freak and purchase those "Thoroughly Washed"... Now I'm worried about those. I've long maintained that one of the single greatest factors in illness is 'worry'. There's a tremendous amount of scientific literature that backs that up as well. I'm not saying 'be blind' but you run an even greater risk by buying produce from your local farmers market since he flies far, FAR below the 'radar'. Stuff that crosses international lines is subject to inspection, regulations, rules, and scrutiny. It has to be in decent shape or it will never survive the trip to the marketplace. Your neighbor Fred selling his stuff on Sundays at the local co-op receives NO oversight or regulation. Del Monte, Melissa's, Armour, and the like, have Federal inspectors crawling all over them 24/7. You can argue all you want about whether or not they're in bed together, but they're still there, which is far more than your neighbor is subject to. Do you enjoy your salads? If so, eat them all you like! *Something* is guaranteed to kill you before you leave the planet- it might as well be something you like ;-) :-P Don't worry, be happy ;-) -Jim C http://www.StepUpForCharity.org Mild to Wild(R)
