I lived outside of Laredo Texas in the brush country as a teenager
(many eons ago)
and I used to hunt with a single shot micro bore Winchester 22 .
There was never any lack of rabbits (open season, no limits) jackrabbits (same)
wild doves, quail and the fishing wasn't bad either when I put my mind to it.
There were times when things got tight but I never felt the need to
eat armadillo.
I think I would have sooner eaten a roasted lizard or tortoise.
(Tastes like chicken!)
I'm not squeamish, I've had tarantulas as pets. (Dearest Guinevere
where are you now?)
(Gone male, went crazy and died alas.)
But anyway...
