The answer is seven. The clue is the last split. 1/2 chile plus a 1/2 chile
leaves zero. From there you work back. One chile was the final remainder.
Before that the remainder was 3. At the start there had to be 7.
OK. At the first bridge you give 3 1/2 plus 1/2 =4 leaving 3
At the second bridge, you give 1 1/2 plus 1/2 leaving 1
At the third bridge you have 1 chile so you give 1/2 plus 1/2 and you
now have none.
