Before applying gypsum, I'd have a soil test.  Because although the 
gypsum might do well in breaking up the clay, gypsum is high in calcium.

The overapplication of calcium to your soil will raise the soil pH, make 
many micronutrients unavailable to your plants, and interfere with the 
absorption of Magnesium.

So - see your Extension service for a soil test kit first.
