I'd be more worried about chopping a big chunk out of the plant <g>.
Even a full choke has some spread to it.

High velocity hollow-point .22s (Remington Hornets, for example) will
take out a destructive animal easily without damaging the plants around 
it.  So will a crossbow bolt fitted with a broadhead (and the crossbow 
doesn't make any neighbor-disturbing noise.)
