I've had that happen with Chinense.  A gave a friend a couple, he complained
of no heat.  I tried them and had to agree.  Others from the same plant were
normal.  Also happend with some Jalapenos, first crop had no heat (but were
huge), afterwards were normal.

One of those I pickled Saturday had a pointed tip.  I'll have to remember to
look for heat differences when I eat it.
