[CH] Curry without mayo

OK, with the recent talk of curry mayo...
Does anyone have nifty mixes/masalas to use in recipes that call
for curry powder? I know that no self-respecting Indian would use curry
powder, and the fact that it really is a British food item makes me shudder
(curry powder was originally created for British colonials who left India
but were nostalgic about the food there).
I have several recipes I've collected from various places, mostly
of the "quick & easy from the '50's) variety, which call for curry powder.
These seem "OK" if I use a very good curry powder, but if I could come up
with a decent powder of my own, that I could make in small batches from
whole spices and such, as well as modify to meat my own needs, I could do
better than just putting in 1 1/2 times as much curry powder as the recipe
says, and adding a healthy coating of cayenne. And, but making it as a
powder myself, it'll be just as convenient having pre-mixed powder and all
- just a little more of a workout for the mortar and pestle and little
coffee grinder on a few sundays here & there.
