Because a great many chile peppers have a large leaf surface area.  If
planted in full sun they tend to wilt & become water starved- like mine
right now!  This is because they are 'sweating' faster than they can
drink.  These chiles (habanero in particular) like a little bit of shade
during the heat of the day, especially in humid climates.
