No, your mother is wrong.  Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex
virus.  They will occur when your immune system is under stress, like when
you have a cold.  (Hence the name, cold sore.)  Since it's been proven that
eating hot stuff is beneficial to your immune system, eat more peppers!
