Apples are typical for this area- the chiles are amidst some 60 acres of
apple trees at that farm & they have another 50 some at the home place. 
There are no less than 1/2 dozen different orchards just here in my area
that I could name.  There used to be many, many more but land use
pressures and the big grocery stores are driving them out.

Yes- the black plastic stuff helps immensely!  It warms the soil up in
the spring so that the chiles do better.  It also keeps the weed
competition down to a minimum so they get a jump on that.  The biggest
benefit (for me) is that it also helps keep the soil moisture in.  We
have some pretty dry summers sometimes and it helps to keep the plants
alive.
