It had one hell of a "bloom" in the mouth, which is probably what made some 
people spit it out immediately.  Perhaps it was mustard oil, as someone 
said.  I couldn't inhale through my mouth, but I could still breathe through 
my nose.  OTOH on a few occasions around my family's dinner table, we've had 
some batches that would lock me up completely - horseradish in my mouth kept 
me from inhaling through my nose or mouth.

Then, everything stops.  The meat gleaned from the soup bones, dusted with 
salt, waits on the fork.  The piece of dark rye bread laughs up at me from 
the plate.  The shot glass of vodka, cold from the freezer, lounges in the 
confident knowledge that my warm hand will soon be reaching for it.

Then I do it all again.
