I may have missed it, but I don't think anyone has mentioned
computer-generated labels.

Word processing software has templates for labels. These templates can be
used to type labels for plants. I use clear address labels (1" by 2 3/4", 30
per sheet (Avery 5660)). The printing needs to be done with a laser printer.
The address labels then need to be attached to something such as plastic or
metal label.

The labels that I've made this way have lasted 3 summers (that's how long
ago I started doing it). The print on the label has shown no sign of
weathering.

Besides lasting a long time, another advantage of the computer-generated
labels is that they very easy to read (use a large font). Also, you can put
additional information in fine print on the label.
