Re: [CH] Almost end of season

Rich,

My pubescens pots are mostly in the 8-10 gal range and often have two identical plants in them to make isolating or bagging for pure seed easier.

A red rocoto in my livingroom window is by itself in an 18 gal container. 2 orange rocotos on my deck are each in an 18 gal container. Here's the rub.... a slightly rootbound rocoto in an 8 gal pot puts on more pods than if I carefully transplanted, keeping rootball intact into an 18 gal. Don't know why, but it's happened 3 out of 3 times so far.

This is a close-up of one bag with about 15 nearly full size pods in it and one ripe one.

I then tie a piece of red yarn around the stems so will know when I pick them that they are uncrossed seeds.

These were on a C. Pubescens variety from Guatemala. Didn't get ripe pods until December 28th the first year from a February 15 th seed start. Extra late (compared to others) this year too. The 7' plant is loaded with green pods. Picked the 1st ripe pod on Oct 1st. That's nearly 3 months earlier than last year and I'm hoping it will produce even earlier in it's 3rd summer.

Paul,

Yes, I'm going to try a very small lasagna garden in the front yard right up next to the house. Probably 3' wide by 10' long. Front yard is heavily shaded so will be planting new C. pubescens in it. Varieties that will give up ripe pods by end of July.

John,
That's all I can do I just wish I could bring in all the plants.
How big are the pots that the biggest C. Pubes are in?

I bagged a few plants tonight, covered them with small plastic garbage
bags after watering to help protect them from the frost.
