canola was created by selective breeding, not genetic modification.
the current GM canola crops are often glyphosate herbicide resistant
varieties, genetically modified to allow application of a herbicide
without killing the plant. ( not mentioning any companies here )
   if the biotech's were gonna work on chiles, i suspect they might
try to modify for drought resistance, or for whatever caused all
those crop failures in the southern USA last year. was it a fungus??
